Survey Methodology

Physicians were invited to participate in an online survey. Respondents were required to practice medicine in the US.

  • Sample size: 15,181 physicians across 29+ specialties met the screening criteria and completed the survey; weighted to the American Medical Association's physician distribution by specialty and state.
  • Recruitment period: June 25 through September 19, 2019
  • Sampling error: The margin of error for the survey was +/- 0.80% at a 95% confidence level using a point estimate of 50%.

The report explores happiness at work and at home, personality traits, and lifestyle choices, and also uncovers the differences among millennials, Gen Xers, and baby boomers.

The National Physician Burnout & Suicide Report 2020 takes an in-depth look at the prevalence and severity of burnout (and its causes) among physicians. The report also reveals the preferred methods of coping for three generations of physicians.
